A new kitchen is exciting, but it's a project that can take some time. Before contractors can start, you'll need to clean out that space. Then, while the project is ongoing, you'll need to manage to prepare and eat meals without your common area, so planning is essential.
You may be able to grill outdoors, or you may wish to invest in an electric skillet, slow cooker, or hot plate. Whatever you choose, you may want to create a space for preparing meals, storing ingredients, and dining. Things will be easier if you opt for simple meals during the renovations and consider dining out at least part of the time.
Your fridge may be inaccessible, so you may want to relocate an old fridge or mini-fridge to your garage or another part of your home to enjoy cool drinks and fresh ingredients for meals.
We at Colebrook Construction take pride in our ability to isolate the workspace and prevent dust and debris from migrating into other parts of your home. But not all contractors are as meticulous as we are. When working with other contractors, you may want to place plastic sheeting over the entrance of your kitchen during remodeling and consider changing your cleaning routine to keep things manageable.
Before the work on your kitchen can start, you'll need to pack up everything in your kitchen. To do this effectively, get packing tape and boxes and try to keep all like items, such as pots or cutlery, together for easier unpacking. Consider packing away dishes, too, and switch to disposable cutlery and plates since you won't have access to a dishwasher or kitchen sink.
Going through a renovation alone or as a couple is one thing. Surviving a kitchen remodel with kids is very different. Where possible, try to include older kids in the process by helping them offer ideas on meals you can create easily. You will want to keep children out of the workspace and clear the exit path so the contractors can use and move their equipment efficiently.
